About the role

This role will be reporting to the Technical Services Manager and will be based at MPT but will also be required to travel to regional centres at times. The role will require the successful applicant to work closely with staff at country sites , the Melbourne Port Terminal team, Logistics and Grower Services.

The role has responsibility for implementing and applying commodity standards, testing procedures and grain management techniques for quality assurance purposes. This testing will apply to all commodities which are stored, received and out turned from our country sites. A primary focus of this role will be the development and assisting with Grain Classification training and use of sampling equipment.


  • Supporting harvest operations including testing of 500mt running samples  
  • Assisting in developing Grain Classification Training packages and conducting of training for both Melbourne Port Terminal and our country sites  
  • Conducting periodic audits in line with the business’s ISO accreditation requirements   
  • Providing instruction and coaching to staff on Quality Standards and issues
  • Preparing all client samples  
  • Maintaining all sampling and laboratory equipment and ensuring calibration is performed as required
  • Providing analysis and technically accurate reports of laboratory data to both internal and external customers  
  • Monitoring and ensuring efficient usage of resources

Essential skills and experience:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills  
  • Strong attention to detail plus analytical and problem-solving skills  
  • Advanced computer skills including Word, Excel and Powerpoint  
  • Prior experience in the Grain Industry  
  • Strong influencing skills and the ability to work well in a team environment   
  • Self-motivated with excellent planning, organisational and time management skills
  • Grain classification experience

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110) or equivalent, or desire to obtain
  • Familiarity with the ISO 9001 standard, accreditation and audit process
  • Presentation skills and experience in coordinating and delivering workplace training 
  • Tertiary qualifications in a science related discipline
  • Prior experience in quality management systems and/or running a laboratory
